Complete Group’s DUO connection, the industry-first multi taper rotary shouldered connection, was put through its first round of field testing earlier this month. A string of 4 ½” S135 pipe and heavy weight drill pipe equipped with 400 DUO connections was deployed on a rig in Northern Alberta, replacing lower-torque DS40 pipe, with the goal of verifying the behavior and performance of the DUO connection design in real-world operating conditions.
Over 2000m of slow and aggressive lateral drilling was conducted, with multiple bits trips being done due to the hard formations encountered. Through it all, the DUO drill string performed exceptionally well under these high torque drilling conditions, and demonstrated it’s potential for rapid stabbing and spin up behavior until the well successfully reached Target Depth!
